Farrands, Hutson, and Kasch first worked together on the documentary film His Name Was Jason. According to Farrands, who reunited with Hutson, they jointly decided that it was time to tell the stories behind why the various Elm Street films were created and why they decided to fund the entire project independently.

The five directors, John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens, return to Hollywood after the war but are forever haunted by what they saw. The 25 October 2009 concert in Pasadena, California was streamed live on U2's YouTube channel, the first time a concert was streamed live on YouTube. Over 10 million viewers streamed the concert, making it the largest streaming event in the website's history. The shoot was directed by Tom Krueger, who had previously worked with the band on the film U2 3D.
