Diving into the Unknown

   2016    Culture
Four Finnish cave divers face their worst nightmare when two of their friends drown deep inside an underwater cave in Norway. When the official recovery operation is called off by the Norwegian and British authorities after being deemed too risky, the friends set out on a secret mission to retrieve the bodies themselves. "Diving into the Unknown" isn’t just the dramatic story of a life-threatening mission. It is also a story about unconditional friendship that truly runs deep. While each member of the team has years of experience exploring dangerous deep-sea caves, together they are about to face the biggest challenge of their lives. To make it out alive, they will need to be able to rely on each other every second of the way. And the physical demands of this operation will pale in comparison to the psychological toll it will take on everyone involved. With footage from the actual accident and multiple cameras both above water and deep below the surface, this film follows the breathtaking recovery mission from beginning to end.

Rescue

   2011    Culture    3D
The film captures the dynamics and drama of disaster response, giving the audience an insiders view of a truly remarkable force for good in a world that is increasingly in need of it. From the individual civilian at risk for their life adrift at sea to a massive natural disaster threatening thousands of lives, there is a mechanism and resources in place to help save lives. Oddly, the instrument of hostility, the military, is even more often the instrument for saving civilian lives on both a smaller and larger scale. Disaster Response commands are in place to deploy appropriate resources to trouble spots at a moment's notice, often requiring split second decisions with many lives at stake.

Cooked: Air

   2016    Culture
Of the four elements, air is the most elusive because we can't see it. There's something very magical about it. One of the ways we transform food is by getting air into it. Think of the soufflé, think of the loaf of bread. These things are elevated by the fact that they now contain air. They're ethereal. Visit food labs and Moroccan fields as Michael Pollan delves into the science of bread-making and the nature of gluten.

Facing Ali

   2009    Culture
Muhammad Ali was arguably the greatest boxer of the 20th century, and that rare fighter whose presence in the culture of the day was equal to (or perhaps even greater than) his remarkable skills in the ring. Ali was a superb fighter who squared off against a variety of gifted athletes during his career, and filmmaker Pete McCormack offers a new perspective on Ali through this documentary, in which some of his opponents speak about their experiences with the man. Facing Ali includes interviews with Joe Frazier, who speaks of the bitterness that still remains of his rivalry with Ali; George Chuvalo, a Canadian fighter who recalls that while Ali defeated him, he went dancing with his wife afterward while the winner went to the hospital; George Foreman, whose memories include a powerful punch that Ali chose not to land; Leon Spinks, whose 1978 upset victory over Ali thrust him into a level of fame he was not prepared to handle; Ernie Terrell, who discusses the technique and strategy behind Ali's approach; and many more.
